How to change the daily habits of a puppy

The daily habits of puppies, whether good or bad, are like marks engraved in life, deeply influencing their quality of life and the way they get along with their owners.

The daily habits of puppies, whether good or bad, are like marks engraved in life, deeply influencing their quality of life and the way they get along with their owners. When we find that puppies have some undesirable habits, such as barking randomly, defecating and urinating everywhere, being picky eaters, etc., we always feel eager to help them correct these habits. Changing a puppy's daily habits doesn't happen overnight. It requires us to deeply understand the root causes of habit formation, use professional training methods, and pour in a lot of patience and love to gradually guide the puppy to a better state of life.

Many of a puppy's habits are gradually formed in daily life, and there are often specific reasons behind these habits. For example, the habit of defecating and urinating everywhere. For young puppies, it may be because they haven't established the awareness of fixed defecation and don't know where to excrete. Or the owner may not guide them in time and miss the best time for training. As for the habit of being a picky eater, it may be that the owner is too accommodating during feeding and often provides snacks to the puppy, causing it to lose interest in the main food. Or the variety of food is too single to meet the puppy's taste needs. As for barking randomly, it may be that the puppy wants to attract the owner's attention, or it is curious or fearful of external sounds and expresses its emotions by barking. Only when we truly understand the reasons for these habits can we make targeted changes.

Establishing a regular daily routine is the foundation for changing a puppy's daily habits. Puppies, like humans, need a stable rhythm of life to cultivate good habits. From fixed waking up and sleeping times every day to regular feeding and walking, a regular routine allows the puppy's body and mind to adapt. For example, taking the puppy out for a walk at 7 o'clock every morning to let it solve the problem of defecation outdoors. Over time, the puppy will form the habit of defecating at fixed times and places. In terms of feeding, provide food to the puppy at three fixed times in the morning, noon, and evening, and control the amount of food to avoid the puppy developing the habits of being picky eaters and overeating. When the puppy gradually adapts to the regular daily routine, its behavior will become more orderly, and those bad habits will gradually improve in the regular life.

Positive reinforcement is an effective way to change a puppy's habits. Puppies naturally like to be recognized and rewarded by their owners. Using this characteristic, when a puppy exhibits the behavior we expect, promptly give rewards, which can be delicious snacks, enthusiastic praise, or gentle strokes. For example, when a puppy successfully defecates in the designated toilet area, immediately give it a snack as a reward and happily praise it. The puppy will associate this good behavior with the reward and gradually understand that defecating in this place will win the owner's love, and thus be more willing to repeat this behavior. When training a puppy not to bark randomly, give rewards when it stays quiet at the moments when it should be quiet, so that it knows that being quiet is the correct behavior. Through repeated positive reinforcement, the puppy will be more motivated to exhibit the behavior we expect, and bad habits will gradually be replaced under the guidance of rewards.

Avoiding incorrect reinforcement is also crucial. Sometimes, the owner's inadvertent behavior may unconsciously reinforce the puppy's bad habits. For example, when a puppy barks constantly because it wants to get attention, if the owner immediately soothes it, the puppy will think that barking can attract the owner's attention and bark even more. The correct approach is to stay calm when the puppy barks and ignore it until it stops barking, and then give attention and rewards. Another example is when a puppy is a picky eater. If the owner is worried that it will be hungry and changes the food, it will make the puppy think that refusing food can get it something more delicious. Therefore, when the puppy is a picky eater, don't compromise easily. Take away the food after leaving it for a while and provide it at the next mealtime, so that the puppy understands that only by accepting the food in front of it can it fill its stomach. By avoiding these incorrect reinforcement methods, the puppy's bad habits will not be continued or strengthened.

Gradual guidance and patient perseverance are the keys to changing a puppy's habits. Change doesn't happen overnight, and puppies need time to adapt to new behavior patterns. When training a puppy to use the toilet in a fixed place, it may often forget at the beginning and defecate and urinate everywhere. At this time, the owner should not be impatient and should not scold or beat the puppy. Instead, clean up in time and take the puppy to the correct toilet place and tell it that this is where it should defecate. With persistent guidance day after day, the puppy will eventually master the correct toilet habits. The same is true when changing other habits of the puppy. Each training requires sufficient patience, allowing the puppy to make mistakes and giving it time to grow. As long as we persevere in guiding, the puppy will gradually develop good daily habits with our efforts.

Changing a puppy's daily habits is a journey full of challenges but also full of warmth and hope. From exploring the reasons for habit formation to using scientific methods for guidance, every step embodies our deep love for the puppy. One day, when we see the puppy that used to be naughty and have many bad habits turn into a well-behaved and cute companion, growing happily in a regular life, we will understand that all our efforts are worthwhile. Because in our hearts, the puppy has long been an indispensable part of our life. We are willing to use professional knowledge and endless love to accompany it in developing good habits and spend every wonderful day together.
