When you affectionately stroke a dog and accidentally discover the brown dirt in its ears, a hint of worry will surely surge in your heart. Dogs' ears are important organs for perceiving the world, and keeping their ears clean is crucial for their health. Those brown dirt may be earwax, inflammatory secretions, or parasite excrement. Understanding how to properly remove them is a compulsory course for every dog lover.

Dogs have unique ear structures, with an L-shaped external auditory canal that is more prone to accumulating dirt and grime compared to humans. Under normal circumstances, dogs' ears secrete a small amount of earwax to protect the ear canal. But if there is too much earwax and the color turns brown, it may be a health problem. For example, when infected with ear mites, they multiply extensively in the ear canal and produce brown, coffee like secretions; Otitis media and otitis externa caused by bacterial or fungal infections can also lead to increased secretion and abnormal color in the ear.

Before removing dirt from a dog's ears, it is important to make preparations. Choose a well lit, quiet, and comfortable environment that allows you to clearly see the inside of your dog's ears while also providing peace of mind. Prepare a dog specific ear cleaning solution, a gentle and non irritating formula that can effectively dissolve earwax without harming the delicate ear canal of dogs. Also, prepare some cotton balls or soft tissues to wipe the ear canal.

When starting to clean, gently hold the dog in your arms and keep it in a comfortable position. Communicate with it in a gentle tone, gently caress its head and neck, and let it relax. It's like conveying a sense of security to a dog, telling it that you're helping it, not harming it. After the dog's emotions stabilize, gently open its ears and drop an appropriate amount of ear cleaning solution into the ear canal, usually 3-5 drops.

After dripping the cleaning solution, do not wipe immediately, but gently massage the dog's ear with your fingers for about 30-60 seconds. During the massage, you will hear a "gurgling" sound coming from the ear canal, which is the cleaning solution dissolving earwax. Through massage, the cleaning solution can fully apply to earwax, making it easier to remove. Dogs may resist due to the sensation of foreign objects in their ear canals, so you should gently comfort them and tell them, 'It's okay, it'll be fine soon.'.

After the massage, gently wipe the dog's external auditory canal with a cotton ball or soft tissue. Starting from the entrance of the ear canal, gently wipe from the outside to the inside, being careful not to penetrate deep into the ear canal to avoid damaging the dog's eardrums. Clean up the brown dirt that has been wiped off gently, avoiding pulling on the dog's ears. If it is not cleaned thoroughly once, you can drip the cleaning solution again and repeat the steps of massage and wiping.

During the process of cleaning up dirt, it is important to closely observe the dog's reaction. If the dog shows pain, discomfort, or frequent shaking, it may be due to improper operation or severe inflammation in the dog's ears. In this case, stop the operation immediately and take the dog to see a veterinarian. Some dogs may be very resistant to cleaning their ears. In this case, do not force it, you can pause for now and try again after the dog's emotions have stabilized. You can also interact with your dog's ears more in daily life, such as gently stroking their ears to gradually get used to being touched.

Removing brown dirt from a dog's ears is not just a cleaning task, but also a manifestation of our care for the health of dogs. Every gentle wipe, every gentle soothing word, is our deep love for dogs.
