In the warm moments we spend with dogs, their lively and adorable appearance illuminates our lives like sunshine. However, when the invisible killer of heart disease quietly descended, our hearts were also tightened. Dog heart disease usually goes through four stages, each with unique manifestations and impacts. Understanding these can help us better protect the health of dogs and provide support and care when they need it the most.

Phase 1: Initial stage (subclinical stage)

In the early stages of heart disease, although the dog's body has undergone some subtle changes, from the appearance, they seem no different from usual. At this point, the dog's heart may have begun to show structural or functional abnormalities, such as myocardial thickening, mild valve disease, etc. However, due to the compensatory mechanism of the body, dogs often do not have obvious clinical symptoms and can still maintain a normal state of life, playing and running with full vitality. But that doesn't mean we can take it lightly. Regularly taking dogs to pet hospitals for comprehensive physical examinations, including electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, and other tests, can help us detect any signs of heart problems in a timely manner during this stage.

Phase 2: Early stage (mild symptom phase)

As the condition progresses, the dog enters the early stages of heart disease, and some mild symptoms begin to gradually appear. Dogs may become more prone to fatigue than before. They used to be fond of running and playing for long periods of time, but now they are panting and need to rest after playing for a while. Exercise endurance significantly decreases, and after a little activity, breathing becomes rapid and the breathing rate increases. Mild coughing may also occur in a quiet state, especially at night or after excitement. These symptoms may not seem severe, but they are important warning signals from the dog's body. We need to pay extra attention to the daily behavior changes of dogs and take them to see a veterinarian in a timely manner. Veterinarians may prescribe medications to alleviate symptoms based on specific circumstances, such as vasodilators to help the heart pump blood more easily, diuretics to reduce excess fluid burden in the body.

Phase 3: Mid stage (moderate symptom period)

When dogs enter the middle stage of heart disease, symptoms will become more apparent and worsen. Coughing becomes frequent and intense, and may cough up white or pink foam like sputum, which is the manifestation of pulmonary congestion. Shortness of breath is more severe, and even during rest, the abdomen will rapidly rise and fall, making an effort to breathe. The dog's mental state has significantly deteriorated, becoming lethargic, losing interest in the things around it, and no longer as lively and active as before. Appetite may also be affected, eating less than before. Some dogs may also experience abdominal swelling due to impaired heart function, resulting in poor blood circulation and fluid accumulation in the abdomen. At this moment, the dog's body is experiencing immense pain, which we can see in our eyes and feel in our hearts. It is crucial to seek medical attention promptly and strictly follow the veterinary treatment plan for treatment. In terms of medication treatment, in addition to continuing to use the previous medication, it may also be possible to add cardiac stimulants and other drugs to enhance the contraction force of the heart.

Stage Four: Late Stage (Severe Symptom Stage)

In the late stage of heart disease, the dog's condition is already very serious, and the functions of various organs in the body are severely affected. Dyspnea has reached its peak, and dogs may experience mouth opening breathing, shallow and rapid breathing, and even rely on oxygen support to maintain basic breathing. Cough persists and is difficult to relieve. Extremely lethargic, lying in a corner almost all day, unwilling to move. The body is extremely weak, and it may become difficult to even stand and walk. Severe edema may occur in multiple parts of the body, such as limbs, chest, abdomen, etc. At this moment, the life of the dog is at stake, and every companionship and care we provide is particularly precious. In terms of treatment, veterinarians will take various measures to alleviate the pain of dogs and improve their final quality of life. It may increase the dosage of drugs, adjust the types of drugs, and even consider some special treatment methods.

The four stages of dog heart disease are like a difficult journey, each stage is full of challenges. As the closest companion of dogs, we should always pay attention to their health status and keenly detect abnormalities from daily behavioral changes. Once it is discovered that dogs may have heart disease, it is important to take them to a veterinarian in a timely manner and actively cooperate with treatment. During the process of dogs fighting against heart disease, we accompany them through every stage with our patience, care, and love. Because dogs give us unconditional love and loyalty, we should also be their strongest support when they need it the most, and do our best for their health and happiness.
